Snodgrass, in her American Indian painters; A biographical directory (Contributions from the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation) (1968) quoted Sandy as stating in 1940 that as an Indian artist his hope was to make a "small contribution to a great race" by artistically and authentically portraying the customs of his people. According to Dockstader Percy Sandy's "paintings of religious subjects caused his ostracism from Zuni Pueblo, and he was forced to move to Taos, where he lived for the rest of his life." (quoted from Lester's Biographical Directory of Native American Painters, 1995).
